Public Awareness

The Public Awareness Coordinator at the North Dakota State Library has the responsibility of promoting libraries and library services throughout North Dakota.

In addition to promoting the State Library services, the Public Awareness Coordinator assists libraries throughout the state in promoting their local programs and services. The Public Awareness Coordinator helps coordinate North Dakota State Library events, including the Bismarck/Mandan Summer Reading Kickoff and is the North Dakota representative to the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). Another responsibility of the Public Awareness Coordinator is to make sure that the State Library website is accurate and user-friendly.

If you would like assistance with public relations or marketing at your library, please contact Adam Emter at 800-472-2104 or aemter@nd.gov.

The Public Awareness Coordinator at the North Dakota State Library functions as the North Dakota state representative to the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). CSLP is a grass-roots consortium of 48 states working together to provide high-quality summer reading materials at the lowest cost possible for public libraries. The Public Awareness Coordinator represents all North Dakota public libraries through ongoing communication and committee work with other member states and also by attending the annual CSLP national conference. Every year, CSLP publishes a summer reading manual, which contains valuable information for planning, promoting, and hosting a successful summer reading program.

New for 2010!

  • The North Dakota State Library will provide one free summer reading manual to every public library in the state! Previously, the State Library passed along the $10 charge to public libraries, but the change was made to encourage more libraries to host a summer reading program and kickoff event (the statewide Summer Reading Kickoff Day will be June 2, 2010) and to participate in the unified themes that come from CSLP. Order your summer reading manual now!

  • CSLP is picking up the tab for shipping costs on summer reading items ordered through the Upstart incentive catalog, which you will receive with your manual.

  • The manuals are packaged with DVDs instead of CDs, simply because the electronic materials would no longer fit on a single CD. If you have any problems accessing the DVD materials, which include graphics, line-art, reproducible forms, promotional materials, and a full .pdf copy of the manual, please contact the State Library.

Summer Reading Kickoff Day

Governor Hoeven has been requested to proclaim Wednesday, June 2, 2010 “Summer Reading Kickoff Day @ Your Library”. All libraries planning to host a kickoff event are encouraged to host it on Summer Reading Kickoff Day. A summer reading kickoff event is a great way to attract community and media attention to your library!

Listserv

An e-mail listserv is available for North Dakota librarians who would like to share ideas and resources about summer reading programs. To subscribe to the list, send an email to listserv@nd.gov with "subscribe NDSL-SUMREAD your name" (without the quotation marks) in the body of the message.

If you have questions about the statewide summer reading program, please contact Adam Emter at 800-472-2104 or aemter@nd.gov.

Every year, the North Dakota State Library showcases library services at conventions, conferences, and trade shows throughout North Dakota. State Library staff use these booths as an opportunity to inform North Dakotans about services of the State Library and other North Dakota libraries. Some of the places that you might see a North Dakota State Library booth include the North Dakota State Fair, the KFYR Agri International Trade Show, Marketplace for Entrepreneurs, the North Dakota Homeschool Association Conference, the North Dakota Education Association Conference, and the North Dakota Library Association Conference.
