TutorND offers free online tutoring and academic resources to all ND residents. Get live, one-to-one help from carefully screened tutors in major subjects like math, science, social studies, English, or get resume and job search assistance. LearningExpress Library
Are your patrons looking for help updating their resumes? Would your students benefit from taking a practice test for the ACT or other skill improvement tests? LearningExpress Library is a database of practice tests, skill building, electronic review books, and test preparation guides. There are online learning centers for improvement for math, reading comprehension, writing and grammar, and vocabulary and spelling that span from elementary grades to college level. There are also college preparation courses, with practice tests and tutorial lessons for the SAT, ACT, and others, including graduate school entrance exams such as the GRE, MCAT, and LSAT. The North Dakota State Library offers a library orientation to all individuals who work for state government. This orientation includes a tour of the State Library collection and an introductory course on using the ODIN catalog and the databases. It is open to all state employees, at no cost to the employee or agency. Training is provided by the State Library staff and notice of upcoming sessions is advertised on the state government e-mail list. The State Library provides training to your agency on the Online Dakota Information Network (ODIN) catalog, as well as the databases. These training sessions can take place either at the North Dakota State Library or onsite at your agency. Sessions may also be planned in advance at an offsite location outside of Bismarck as well. The training staff from the North Dakota State Library offers an opportunity for teachers and staff to receive training in using the databases for research. These presentations are a wonderful opportunity for public libraries to provide a workshop to their community. These sessions are provided at no cost, we just need a high speed internet connection and a room big enough to present this training to the public. We can bring all of own equipment as well. If you have a special group that meets at your library such as local genealogy clubs, home school students and parents, after school home work center for children, adult learners group, etc, we can tailor one of our workshops to meet the groups need. A minimum of ten participants is required for a session and pre-registration is strongly suggested. Our Ancestry Library Edition presentation is perfect for your patrons who are just starting out with discovering their family history and those who have been involved in genealogy research, but could use some training on using the database. Homework Help for Parents is a presentation for parents who want to help their children with reports and research papers, but struggle with finding reliable sources. By using the Online Library Resources, parents can now access the same types of research materials from home that they would find in a library. This workshop will focus on content as well as demonstrate searching techniques. The databases featured during this presentation contain full text articles from newspapers and magazines as well as transcripts from national news broadcasts, a wide variety of reference materials, maps, and a large collection of books online. The North Dakota State Library training staff is offering classes in two locations for one graduate credit this summer. Classes will be in Grand Forks at the Grand Forks Public Library on June 11th and 12th and in Bismarck at the Bismarck State College in the library computer lab on June 14th and 15th. Effective Online Research will focus on the need for students to find reliable sources for research. We will explore searching methods for the Online Library Resources as well as source citations and other features on the databases that are useful for conducting research. We’ll also examine the ODIN UFind catalog and WorldCat.org. The resources being explored will have a practical application to your classroom instruction and provide your students with reliable information to use in research papers and other school work. A minimum of ten participants is needed for each class.
Credit for Effective Online Research is available for teachers from Minot State University, University of North Dakota, and North Dakota State University. Credit is available for Library Media Specialists from Valley City State University. NOTE: The content of this course is the same as the course taught in 2011.
