Did you know that macular degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness in the Western world? However, other eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts and retinitis pigmentosa can steal a person's ability to read standard print. In addition, many physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, stroke, severe arthritis, dyslexia, AIDS and brain injuries prohibit individuals from holding a book or newspaper, or comprehending the printed word.
